Cyclone season can be a stressful time, but there are a number of things you can do to help keep you and your family safe during a storm.
You know how to prepare before the storm arrives. Now here are our tips for navigating the storm when it hits - and after the damage is done.
During a cyclone
- Turn off the power, gas and water.
- Stay indoors in the strongest part of the building.
- Know where your family members are, and if you live together, try and stick together.
- Keep your emergency kit close (find out what should go in an emergency kit here.
- Protect yourself with blankets, rugs or mattresses if need be.
- Listen to the radio for cyclone updates.
After a cyclone
- Drive carefully as roads may be filled with debris. Stay away from fallen power lines, damaged roads and landslides.
- Don't let children play in the storm waters especially near drains and culverts.
- Boil all drinking water.
- Look after your family and neighbours as there will likely be a few hazards around.
- Take photos of both inside and outside your house – this will help us at claim time (especially if you have photos from before the storm, too!)
- If you’re a Tower house insurance customer with optional benefit gale, windstorm, hurricane, cyclone cover, and you’ve been affected by a cyclone, it’s time to make a claim.
To help make the claims process as quick and straight forward as possible, make a claim within 30 days of the event occurring by using our online claim form.
